Lana Del Rey – Video Games/Blue Jeans (Interscope/Stranger, 2011 – Single)

BRIGITTE BARDOT OF THE INDIE WORLD

“She’s got Bardot’s eyes and Daffy Duck’s lips” is what Sam Leith wrote for The Guardian about Lizzy Grant aka Lana Del Rey, the new indie pop star. This beautiful American singer had an album completed a while back ago with producer David Kahne, but it was never released (reasons unknown). Several songs from those sessions were uploaded to YouTube and I must say that r’n’b really doesn’t suit her. So, maybe, the album being shelved is a good thing, because Lana Del Rey completely changed her style and reinvented herself as a diva from the Golden age of Hollywood.

Thanks to YouTube and the Internet, her video for “Video Games” launched her sky high. Both of her two new songs “Video Games” and “Blue Jeans” are really stripped down and done so simple, but sound incredibly powerful. The suiting sound of harp, piano and string section in “Video games” leave enough space for her magnificent voice to echo out of the speakers and give you goose bumps. “Blue jeans” has the rhythm machine and guitar that once again let her voice be the emphasis of the song. Both tracks sing about some old relationship, where she was mistreated but she will “love till the end of time”. We also get the hint of the good girl that isn’t afraid to get dirty for her man.

Great songs, beautiful voice and big potential… Adele, watch out!

Smirujući zvuk harfe, klavira i gudačke sekcije u „Video games“ ostavljaju dovoljno prostora da njen izuzetan glas odzvanja kroz zvučnike i naježi vas. „Blue Jeans“ sadrži ritam mašinu i gitaru, i još jednom daje prednost vokalnom izrazu.

Odlične pesme, lep glas i veliki potencijal… Adel, čuvaj se!

Evanescence – Evanescence (Wind-up, 2011)

“NOTHING IMPORTANT HAPPENED TODAY”

A five year wait for new Evanescence album is over. After five years it looks like nothing has changed. Self-titled album has nothing new or innovative to offer compared to its predecessors “Fallen” and “The Open Door”. Evanescence have established themselves as a commercial metal band (I like to define them as pop metal) since their debut, and with their third record they still don’t feel free to experiment and move forward. They swim in the familiar waters which are leading them to music mediocrity. Evanescence have even changed the producer, hired experienced Nick Raskulinecz and still made record that sounds same as previous ones. I’m not trying to badmouth album, because, it isn’t bad at all. It is everything you can expect from Evanescence, but without music progress they risk losing reputation and eventually selling numbers will drop.

Recommended songs: “What You Want”, “Made of Stone, “The Other Side”, “Oceans”, “Never Go Back” & “Swimming Home”.

Preporučujem:   “What You Want”, “Made of Stone, “The Other Side”, “Oceans”, “Never Go Back” & “Swimming Home”.

SuperHeavy – SuperHeavy (Universal, 2011)

GREAT NAMES DON’T MAKE GREAT ALBUM

SuperHeavy is a new music project featuring Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones), Dave Stewart (Eurhythmics), Damian Marley (Bob Marley’s youngest son), Joss Stone and A. R. Rahman (Academy award winner for “Slumdog Millionaire” score). Although filled with great music talent, the album fails to deliver a high-quality fusion of different musical genres. Instead of a nice combination of styles, the album has Damian’s reggae songs, Rahman’s Indian compositions and few classic Rolling Stones numbers. SuperHeavy seems too artificial and forced. Looks like the only chameleons in this story are veteran Dave Stewart and the young talent Joss Stone, because they successfully introduced their musical style and adjusted to the album’s needs. All around, SuperHaevy’s debut is pretty much chaotic and varying, with a couple of nice songs. In addition, thumbs up for Damian and Joss who carry this album.

Recommended songs: “Miracle Worker”, “Energy”, “Beautiful People” & “World Keeps Turning”.

SuperHeavy deluju previše veštačko i usiljeno.

Preporučujem: “Miracle Worker”, “Energy”, “Beautiful People” i “World Keeps Turning”.
